He was born on December 22, 1929, in a village near Mansuriya city in Egypt’s Dakahlia Governorate.

His father Sheikh Mahmoud Mahmoud al-Zamil was the prayer leader of the village, his paternal uncle was a graduate of Al-Azhar Islamic University and a judge in Mansuriya city, and his maternal uncle, Sheikh Mustafa Ibrahim was a memorizer of the entire Quran.

It was his maternal uncle who encouraged Hamdi Zamil to learn the Holy Book by heart at an early age.

After memorizing the entire Quran, Hamdi started learning recitation with Sheikh Tawfiq Abdul Aziz, an expert in Quranic sciences.

Hamdi went on to become a prominent qari in Egypt. He recited the Quran at the Quran Radio of Egypt on various occasions from 1976 until his death.
